The legalization of an official document is a confirmation that the signature, seal or stamp on this document is authentic. Since Belgium, Sweden and Latvia are members of the European Union and have signed the “Apostille Convention” and other relevant treaties, most official documents from Sweden or Latvia do not need to be legalized before they can be used in Belgium.

Legalization is required if you want to use the following documents before a Belgian authority:

  • Sworn translation
In Sweden, legalization is carried out by a Notarius Publicus, in Latvia by a notary. You will find a list of sworn translators in Sweden on the website of Kammarkollegiet.

  • Medical certificate for a visa application by third-country nationals residing in Sweden
The legalization is carried out by a Notarius Publicus.

  • Financial guarantee in the context of long-stay visa applications for Belgium.
The legalization of the guarantor's signature is carried out at the Embassy of Belgium in Stockholm.
